Since strutting onto the fitness scene in the mid-90s, Zumba has become a worldwide workout phenomenon, spreading dance fever to more than 15 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages. Inspired by Latin music and dance, this heart-pumping cardio workout uses choreographed routines to get participants moving, grooving and sweating off hundreds of calories per class. "I started Zumba in January and have lost 35 pounds," says SparkPeople member JENNYFOOG. "This is the first exercise I have ever enjoyed. I burn between 600 and 800 calories a class depending on the instructor's intensity and how hard I push myself." Music is a great way to maintain motivation for any workout, but with Zumba it truly takes center stage. After all, it was a spontaneous musical decision that inspired the Zumba we know and love today: After forgetting his aerobics music for a fitness class in his native Colombia, Alberto "Beto" Perez improvised by popping in his personal cassette filled with salsa music. And, thus, Zumba was born. Although many instructors use Latin American songs in their classes today, any up-tempo track will do.
