Eating Healthy at Extreme Pita

From SparkPeople’s Editors

If you want a nutritious and customizable sandwich on the go, but want to think outside of your traditional sub sandwich, give Extreme Pita a try! Here are some tips and better choices to keep in mind when you visit this non-traditional sandwich shop.

  • Portion control is key when ordering at any restaurant, including sandwich shops. Sometimes a regular pita sandwich can fit in with your daily nutritional guidelines, but other times, the small serving size is your best option. For example, the regular Grilled Chicken Pita (359 calories, 5 g fat, 892 mg sodium) may be a good choice but when it comes to a Chipotle Steak Pita, small is your best bet (359 calories, 14 g fat, 851 mg sodium).

  • There are a variety of meat pita sandwiches, but since they can be high in fat, be careful with choices and portion size. Your best bets would include the Small Philly Steak Pita (276 calories, 8 g fat, 543 mg sodium), Regular Tuna Pita (316 calories, 2 g fat, 674 mg sodium) or the Regular Smoked Turkey Pita (305 calories, 2 g fat, 1,057 mg sodium).

  • Pita sandwiches also provide a great opportunity to increase your vegetable intake for the day. Try a Regular Veggie Pita (244 calories, 1 g fat, 417 mg sodium) and add extra of your favorite vegetables. If you find it difficult to meet your daily vegetable recommendations, consider flavorful, veggie-filled options like the Small Chicken Caesar Pita (325 calories, 9 g fat, 1,005 mg sodium), a Small Chicken Souvlaki Pita (352 calories, 13 g fat, 1,040 mg sodium) or the Small Fiesta Mexicana Pita (447 calories, 9 g fat, 1,056 mg sodium) with lots of extra vegetables.

  • Sodium can be high in some of Extreme Pita's offerings, so choose wisely if you are watching your sodium intake. High sodium options that still offer lower calorie and lower fat benefits include the Small Buffalo Chicken Pita (328 calories, 10 g fat, 1,152 mg sodium), the Thai Chicken Pita (417 calories, 3 g fat, 1,170 mg sodium), or the Thai Beef Pita (472 calories, 9 g fat, 1,079 mg sodium). Two middle of the road options for sodium are the Small Bourbon Chipotle Chicken Pita (363 calories, 11 g fat, 867 mg sodium) and the Small Chicken Shawarma Pita (331 calories, 12 g fat, 991 mg sodium).

  • If salad without the bread is more tempting to your taste buds, you can get that here, too. Best choices would be the Chicken Caesar Salad (315 calories, 14 g fat, 1,293 mg sodium) or a Traditional Greek Salad (270 calories, 22 g fat, 856 mg sodium).
