Cameron Crowe’s 2001 film ”Vanilla Sky” is one of my all-time favorite movies. (No, it’s not because I’m head over heels for Tom Cruise.) It’s because the psychological thriller is full of twists, and it poses interesting philosophical questions for the characters and the viewers—questions about life, love and true happiness. But another reason I love the movie is because some of its lines really stick with me, long after the credits roll. This movie is one of many unexpected sources of motivational quotes that can apply to many things, including your own healthy lifestyle. Here are my favorites. 1. “Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.” I love this quote and think of it often. How many times have you fallen off the wagon, only to continue stepping backwards instead of learning from your mistakes and moving on? (I’m raising my hand, too.) If it were easy to get back up and keep going, most of us wouldn’t struggle with our weight or with making exercise a habit. So when times are tough, I like to think about these words. There is no reason to wait until tomorrow, next week or next year to start over when you can turn it all around in a moment. 2. “Just remember, the sweet is never as sweet without the sour.” How true! Applied to your own healthy lifestyle journey, these words hold a lot of weight. Sure you might be struggling to stay motivated when your weight loss plateaus for what feels like forever. But those low or “sour” points help you to appreciative of the highs or “sweet” rewards you’ll get in the end. The depth of human emotion really is amazing, isn’t it? If you think about it, we could never truly experience the joys of if we didn’t also know the pain of sadness and sorrow. 3. “Most of us live our whole lives…without any real adventure to call our own. What is any life without the pursuit of a dream?” It’s easy to get stuck in a rut in your day-to-day life or even your fitness routine. But it’s only boring if you make it that way! Who says it can’t be more fun and adventurous? Who says you can’t run a marathon, climb a mountain or finally learn to snowboard? Those sound like pretty adventurous ways to reach a lifelong dream if you ask me. Remember that staying fit and healthy is one surefire way to help yourself reach any goal you might have.
