Last weekend most of us here in Texas, much less the rest of the country, have never heard of the small hill country town of Rochelle, Texas. What put this tiny community on the map was a young lady by the name of Bonnie Richardson. She accomplished what no other person has ever done in the history of the Texas University Interscholastic League State Championships and that was to win back-to-back high school Class A state championships in track and field all by herself. Yes, Bonnie Richardson was the entire girls’ track and field team from her small high school where the senior class numbered 14 students. She outscored all other 56 Class A schools, surpassing her closest competition by 2 points. After winning her first state championship last year she had no intentions of returning to the field until her coaches encouraged her to come back for another year, which thankfully she did. This young lady is not just a remarkable track and field athlete; she was also named valedictorian of her high school class and will attend Texas A&M University in the fall on a scholarship. What I loved reading about Miss Richardson’s story is her complete desire to live her dream, even if that meant she had to go it alone. She is an inspiration to us all. The human spirit is such an indomitable force. When we believe we can achieve, it is amazing where this journey can take us. We may not always win, but we are far better off trying and doing our best than never having the courage to start. Even when you feel the support for you is not there, trust me there will be many of us willing to walk this journey with you. However, you still have to put in the hard work and effort, but never underestimate the power of meeting your goals no matter how long it takes. Trust that others believe in you, even when it is difficult to believe in yourself. You do hold the power of one. Do you believe you hold the power to change your life? Do you believe this journey is just a tad easier when others believe in you? Do you have what it takes to fulfill a dream? |
